In the lead up to World Youth Day and the Journey of the Cross and Icon, Michael Crowe and Sandhurst Youth Ministry have developed a PowerPoint presentation that explains the significance behind the Icon. This PowerPoint is suitable for use in parishes or schools and goes into some of its history and symbolism.

Introduction to the Journey of the Cross & Icon PDF Print E-mail
ImageThe cross and icon began their pilgrimage to Australia with a handover from the Germans who hosted World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne, to a delegation of Australians on Palm Sunday 2006 in Rome.

The cross has been described as the Olympic Torch of World Youth Day. It is now travelling through Australia, having been through oceania including a recent vist to Gizo in the Solomon Islands, bringing hope following the devastation of the tsunami and earthquake that ravaged the region.

Each day from 1 July 2007, you will be able to follow the Journey of the Cross and Icon as it blazes across the nation towards the gathering of the youth of the world around the Cross, and with the Holy Father, for the celebration of WYD08 in Sydney.

An indigenous Message Stick will accompany the Cross & Icon in Australia. The Message Stick is an invitation to the indigenous youth of Australia to come World Youth Day in July 2008.

My reflection on Sydney and what happened PDF Print E-mail
ImageI was blessed to be nominated to represent Sandhurst as part of the Australian delegation that received the World Youth Day Cross and Icon on its arrival into Australia on 1st July 2007. Representatives from all the Australian Diocese and movements were present to start the Cross and Icon on its year-long pilgrimage around our land, and to mark the moment when the countdown towards World Youth Day began in earnest.
