You've probably all heard by now that World Youth Day will be in Sydney in 2008, but what is World Youth Day and how will it affect you?
To quote from the WYD08 Curriculum materials, "World Youth Day was an initiative of Pope John Paul II, inspired by massive gatherings of young people in Rome celebrating the Youth Jubilee in 1984 and the United Nations International Year of Youth in 1985. He wanted to bring together young Catholics from around the globe to celebrate and learn about their faith on a more regular basis. Pope John Paul II saw WYD as a way to reach out to the next generation of Catholics, to demonstrate confidence in them, to rejuvenate the Church and ensure that the core teachings of Christ are transmitted and lived."
So, World Youth Day 2008 is:
An Opportunity... to "catch the flame of Jesus" to deepen your faith to understand our tradition in a catholic imersion experience to share your faith other young people to share your faith older people to discover or rediscover prayer to meet young people from all around the world to see that there are young catholics just like you struggling with life from every corner of the globe to consider what God really wants you to do with your life, what vocation you are called to to evangelise and reach out to those who may not be involved with the Church at present to pray for our Church in Australia
WYD is a Journey, a pilgrimage...
leading from now until July 2008 through parish, regional and diocesan events; through the Journey of the Cross and Icon; through Days in the Diocese; through the week in Sydney and culminating with Mass at Randwick with the Pope, Benedict XVI |
