The life of a parish and of young people is forever changing and evolving. Why is it then that we expect that our youth ministry strategies can be repeated continuously without evaluation, and that our goals don’t need to change? |

When working with young people you will collect a lot of information. The Federal Governments privacy act has put regulations around the collection and safe-keeping of personal information, sensitive information and health information. It also cover the use of photography of young people under the age of 18 and how those photos are used. As a basic rule, no information can be collected from individuals or photos taken of them with them basically saying that it’s ok to do so. When working with young people, this authority needs to come from parents or guardians. |

Don’t feel like you need to have all of the answers about how to deal with every situation. Trained professionals are around and can be called on to offer expertise and advice. It may be helpful to put together a list of resources in your area. You may like to include numbers for: Centacare, Kids Help Line, Crisis Care, Family Services, Parish Priest (A/H), local doctors, police, fire, ambulance etc. |

If a young person is under 18 years of age, it is necessary that their parent or guardian has given consent for the young person to be involved. Parents should be informed of the nature of the activity, where the young person will be, and how the young person can be contacted in case of an emergency. And you should know how to get in contact with the parents should an incident occur. |

A volunteer should always be designated as the first aid representative. This person should be made aware of any medical conditions, have a valid first aid certificate, and maintain an up-to-date first aid kit. Make sure participants and other leaders know who the first aid representative is. If you are running a large event, it is wise to engage the services of professional First Aid, such as St John's Ambulance. |

Providing a safe, caring environment for young people is not an option for parish youth programmes – it is an essential. While most safety & care principles are common sense, it is important to know what your responsibilities are & when it is necessary to call on someone else for help. It is recommended that EACH volunteer is aware of basic safety and care principles. |

I'm sure you are aware of the change in people's view of the earth. For thousands of years we thought the earth was flat and if we ventured too far out we would fall off the edge. Then came the discovery that the earth indeed was round, and there was a paradigm shift in the way that people saw their world. In many ways youth ministry is like this. There is an almost subliminal thinking of "This is the way we have always done things, and to change will be a disaster". There is more than one way to work with youth in your parish. |
